A healthy equine digestive system is essential to a horse’s general well being and performance. The equine digestive process is dependent upon a healthy population of beneficial microorganisms. These good bugs help regulate the pH level of the intestine, which prevents detrimental microorganisms from growing.
This delicate balance can be easily disrupted by sudden changes in diet, such as a change in feed, a flush of grass growth or routine medication. These sudden changes can kill off the beneficial bacteria living in the hind gut and allow harmful, opportunistic bacteria to increase in number, which can lead to gastrointestinal upset. Stress caused by travel, competition, and changes in routine etc, can also disrupt the digestive balance.
